The New Yorker Laura Patchen, came to Berlin in 1977 to study tabla with Pandit Kamalesh Maitra. She is one of the founding members of the Ragatala ensemble in 1980 led by Kamalesh which performs his compositions using European and Indian instruments. She appears on several MC, LP and CD recordings - Ragas on Drums, Kamalesh Maitra and his Ragatala Ensemble, Der Zuckerbäcker aus Kalkutta and Rhythm and Time – Global Percussion Songs. Aside from her focus in the field of traditional Indian music she has lent her tabla sounds to various projects involving jazz, pop and hip-hop. She has taught Tabla since 2005 at the Music School Berlin West. Her search for a non verbal medium for communication and a still point beyond time and space led her ultimately to the study of Indian music.
